At NKUA, he was instrumental in establishing and directing the Information Technologies in Medicine and Biology, a highly successful interdisciplinary Graduate Program that notably paved the way for the DSIT international graduate program. Before his tenure at NKUA, he held tenured associate and assistant professor appointments within the ECE Department at Northeastern University in Boston. During this time, he led the Communications and Digital Signal Processing Center for Research and Graduate Studies, an esteemed academia-industry center of excellence, for a period of five years. He also undertook Visiting Scholar roles at Harvard’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering and MIT’s Laboratory of Information and Decision Systems in Boston.

His research interests span statistical signal and image analysis, machine and deep learning, predictive modeling, high-performance computing, as well as their application in addressing complex challenges in biomedicine and environmental science. Elias actively engages in interdisciplinary research, having taken leadership roles in over 20 funded EU and US research projects. Notably, as an Assistant Professor, he was honored with the prestigious NSF Research Initiation Award. He has been a member of the Editorial Boards of distinguished journals such as IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, and IEEE Signal Processing Letters. Over the years, he has also contributed his expertise to various IEEE Conference technical program and organizing committees. Prof. Manolakos has been elected for two consecutive terms in the IEEE SPS International Technical Committees on the Design and Implementation of Signal Processing Systems and Machine Learning for Signal Processing.
